Conversations recorded primarily by an intimate householder disciple, Sarat Chandra Chakravarty, from 1897 to 1902. The exchanges are informal, lively, and wide-ranging in subject, showing many aspects of the swami's knowledge and interests, and addressing many modern doubts and questions.

Always refering to herself as friend of Swami Vivekananda, Josephine McLeod encouraged and supported him throughout his early struggles in the West. She actively participated in the early trials and triumphs of the Ramakrishna Movement in many places in the world. As an historical document, her story traces the transformation of Vivekananda's great spiritual vision into its present practical form.

The author, a retired professor of Presidency College, Calcutta, gives in broad outline a general overview of the subject with special reference to the literature and practices known in Bengal.
