Evelyn Underhill was the author of several classic works on mysticism, regarded as an outstanding voice in twentieth-century spirituality, and considered largely responsible for the modern discovery of mysticism.

The first part provides an introduction to the general subject of mysticism, and the next, longer part, is a study of the nature and development of mystical consciousness.
